This week’s show…..

Planetary quickies
A new study has found that the Earth and other planets began forming far earlier and much quicker than previously thought. The discovery based on a study of meteorite samples, has major implication for current models of how the solar system formed.

Echoes of ancient Earth
Scientists believe they have detected signatures of proto-Earth, the ancient body impacted by a Mars sized planet called Theia to create the current Earth Moon system.

Earth older than thought

Meanwhile, a separate study shows the timing of the giant impact between proto-Earth and Theia occurred earlier in the solar systems history than previously thought. The new findings show the final major event in Earth’s formation happened just 40 million years after the birth of the solar system.

Solving the Lunar dichotomy
Scientists may finally have worked out why the Moon’s near and far sides look so different. They say it all comes down to how close the Moon was to the Earth when both bodies formed.

Rosetta closes in on comet
European Space Agency’s Rosetta mission to land on a comet has just completed a major milestone. The spacecraft is on target to intercept the Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in August, with the landing expected on remembrance day.
